The Cattle Doctor-Phisic for horse and cattle owners. E.F.Williamson & Co, Grimsby. 1891

Purging
It was advised to prepare a horse for phisic by giving him two mashes of scalded bran and oats with warm water for three or four days, which softened the faeces and promoted the operation of the medicine. “If a strong purge be given to a horse of a costive habit without preparation, it will probably occasion a violent inflammation.”

Receipt No 1. - A PURGING BALL
Barbadoes Aloes, eight drachms; Powdered Ginger and Castile soap, of each two drachms; Oil of Aniseeds, thirty drops. Mix and and make into a ball with treacle.
“This will be found sufficient for a large horse, but if a ball of less strength be required, the quantity of Aloes must be reduced to 7, 6, or 5 drachms, or even less for a pony. If the horse has swelled legs or heels, attended with inffammation, one of Fields' Blood balls should be given at night and the purging ball next morning.

It may be noted that the action of a purgative is increased by giving the animal plenty of exercise and warm water as much as he will drink, and the action is diminished by an opposite conduct. The horse should be allowed to cool down after violent exercise before any quantity of water be given him. When phisic is given without due preparation, the horse frequently swells. In such cases give the following diuretic drink.”

Receipt No2.- DIURETIC DRINK
Glauber's Salts, four ounces; Nitre, half an ounce; Dissolve in half a pint of thin gruel or warm water; Then add, Oil of juniper, half an ounce; and Fields' cattle oils, two table-spoonfulls. Mix together and give as soon as possible.
“The horse should have plenty of walking exersise, and if not evacuated in the course of twenty minutes, the following Clyster must be given:-
